Before we start, let us welcome today’s host, Lee, Jinkyung from Art Center Nabi.
Ms Lee is a team leader of Nabi future Studies at Art Center Nabi that pursues the convergence of technology and art. She has a keen interest in blockchain technology and directed ‘crypto on the beach’ (hackathon on blockchain) and a play on blockchain last year.
Hello, everyone. I am the today’s host, Lee, Jinkyung from Art Center Nabi.
Today, we invited Cho, Jung-hwan, CEO of OKCoin(OKEx) to talk about ‘a future of crypto exchange and digital asset exchanges’. OKCoin is the global top 3 exchanges, and has provided digital asset trade services for bitcoin, litecoin, BCH, Quantum, XRP, NEO, EOS, HSR and others based on its own cold storage technology and high-speed matching engine technology that are as secure as banks’.
Hello, Mr. Cho.
Please introduce yourself. What motivated you to join the blockchain industry. Tell us about your background, and how and when you started to be interested in blockchain technology.
First of all, I would like to thank all those who provided me with this opportunity to talk with female leaders from blockchain and other tech-related fields. I am the CEO of OKCoin Korea. I started my career at P&G, and have been involved in financial derivatives brokerage since then.
When and how you learned about blockchain technology?
I used to work in different countries. While working in Europe and china, I learned about digital assets. It was when I was working in Shenzhen, China that I got introduced to OKLink, a subsidiary of OK group. As I found this field very promising, I suggested setting up JV in Korea. For your information, OKLink is a blockchain-based money transferer.
When was it exactly? Do you find your previous experiences (or background) helpful to understand crypto currency?
While conducting research on one-stop financial transfer services, I learned about blockchain-based money transfer. That guided to this status after having been infatuated with digital assets. It was 2016 when I started to get involved with OKLink. My previous experiences have something in common with blockchain transfer services in terms that both deal with assets, but the fact that the latter is borderless and more transparent intrigued me so much more. Unlike centralized control system bearing risks, decentralized blockchain technology can overcome those vulnerabilities. I found this insightful, in particular.
I agree. Being borderless and transparent is one of the blockchain’s merits. Which term do you prefer, ‘cryptocurrency’ or ‘digital asset’? and why?
I prefer to use the term, ‘digital asset’, as it encompasses more concepts. Technically speaking, cryptocurrency is one of the digital assets. Let me put this way. Air mileage is one of the digital assets, though it was not encrypted. I think the digital asset is the combination of cryptocurrency and existing (non-encrypted) digital assets.
Now, let’s move on to the next topic. What is your take on the outlook of blockchain industry and cryptocurrency transaction? Which will be the mainstream among IEO, STO and DEX?
I will combine my answers to that question. Until now, cryptocurrency market has been operated in opaque and non-transparent way. In particular, mushrooming ICO projects were not be able to develop MVP(Minimum Visible Product). Even those products with MVP were not profitable. Investors also have focused on short-term returns, which made them invest on hot projects rather than learn and investigate the projects themselves. For this industry to grow, some sufferings are unavoidable and we are in the middle of those pains and suffering.
IEO and STO are different in the way they raise funds, and DEX(Decentralized Exchanges) is a type of exchanges. So I will separate them into two categories.
First, IEO is not much different from ICO.
I agree. It has been quite confusing and opaque, as there has been no appropriate standard. And it still is.
Basically, they are quite similar to each other, but have different exchanges where the tokens or coins are traded. Some say IEO is much safer, but I disagree.
Lee:
Why do you think so?
Well, IEO emphasizes that it has extra verification process. However, coin projects can bet in more risky way using IEO, as they lack marketing capabilities.
Plus, conducting both IEO and ICO has high possibilities of violating the guidelines in Korea. Doing both on the same platform is controversial at least here in Korea.
I might have some prejudices as I have engaed in traditional financial markets. I think issuing and trading market cannot coexist in one platform. STO came out before DEX. STO has a long way to go, but I believe this is the way for us to take.

DEX cannot work where the fiat currencies are traded. We discussed DEX in order to enhance transparency at current centralized exchanges. In a decentralized crypto world, the current situation of centralized exchanges controlling the market is nonsensical. Despite this, I have different opinion. I also hope for DEX as well.

Thank you for your insightful answers.
Aside from these are there any other hot trading methods?
In the mid- to long-term, asset tokenization will be highlighted. If we apply universal protocols to existing assets, there is possibility to create trading values among them.
Then, what are the differences between tokenization and reverse ICO?
Reverse ICO is a way to raise funds. That is, business combines blockchain technology with existing BM. Asset tokenization does not necessarily involve ICO, while reverse ICO has higher chances to do so. The same goes to those assets that are tied to one platform and thus hardly traded.
Lee:
Let’s move onto the next topic. Next question is about “centralization vs. decentralization”. You already talked about this topic, but can you share your ideas with us more, as it is and will be highly controversial.
The bottom line is that not all the things need to be decentralized, and they should not. If decentralized ledgers help to enhance transparency and efficiency, we should adopt it. If not, we do not need to. I admire Satoshi Nakamoto and there are many things to learn from him, but I dare to say he is not 100% correct. I am not taking “bothsidesism (denying both opposing sides equally)”, but there is no absolute right and wrong. Striking a balance is what we need to do.
Like you said, I think 499community can play an important role in helping blockchain industry to be balanced between centralization and decentralization. I will close the interview here.
Thank you again for joining us today and sharing your insights with us. I also would like to thank 499blockchain community for giving me a chance to host this interview.
My pleasure. I would like to send my thanks to you, journalists and all the members of 499community.
